What if on your 21st birthday your father told you that you were not who you thought you were?6:00
That is what happens in the opening of this book. Nell finds out that she had been a stowaway upon a boat and her "father" had discovered her on the docks in Australia and when no one claimed her he(and his wife) raised her. Her only possession was a little white suitcase that contained some clothes and a book of fairy tales.
It is this book of fairy tales that leads her to find out who she is. Then the story flips to her granddaughter who upon Nell's death finds out she has inherited a cottage in England. She know nothing of the story of her grandmother stowing away or that she had once tried to find out who she was, but she is given the book and hopes to open the secrets held with in it and the garden that has been forgotten at the cottage. Will she be able to discover who her grandmother really is?
There is also a third story intertwined about Nell's mother and aunt and how they were raised and why she was placed upon the ship that took her to Australia.
I enjoy this book very much. I found it very interesting at how these women were so much alike and how they all became related in the end.
