My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book really surprised me. It was nothing like I thought it was going to be. With everyone comparing it to "The Lottery" (which I hate) I finally decide to read it when parents started asking me if it was ok for their children to read it. It is also on the list for the Sr. level YRCA books. Let's just say that once I started it I had a hard time putting it down. Live or die and the rest of you district's food supply will depend on you living...It is a very intense book. (and I just started book 2) This will be perfect for our book discussion group.
So for the rest of my book group I will hold my comments but here is the blurb from the publisher:
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
