Freedom to READ

Our book group has the tradition that every year we celebrate banned book week. Each of us read a banned book and then come back ready to tell about it, why, where, & when it was banned, and if we agree.

This year we have been given the choice to read To Kill a Mockingbird and/or read a banned book of your choice. We will meet on October 12 at 6pm. If you need help finding a banned book or want to see a list please call or stop by and I will be glad to help. I can also show you how to look up the reason, place and date of the challenged book.

We should all be thankful that we have the freedom to read what choose and we shouldn't take that choice away from others. Celebrate banned book with us September 24 through October 1, 2011.

August Discussion

The IslandThe Island by Victoria Hislop

Book group selection for
August 10, 2011 at 6:00

Alexis has never been told her mother's family history and her mother, Sophia, won't even talk about it. She has been told that her mother grew up on Crete in the village Plaka and while visiting there her mother has given her one name to look up. It is Fotini a friend from her past.

Alexis learns her family's history from Fotini who tells her the tragic tale of her Sophie's family. Which involves family members who had been sent to Spinalonga that was a leper colony at the time. Alexis also learns why her mother has kept silent for all these years. A history that contained sickness (leprosy), emotions of hope and loss, and even the murder of a family member.
